What Is Tie Wire? Annealed vs Galvanized
2 min read OSAK

Tie wire is the flexible wire used in construction to fix reinforcing bars together at their intersections and to tie formwork and scaffolding elements. It is expected to bend easily, not break when twisted and allow fast work by hand.
Annealed (black) tie wire
Low-carbon wire softened by annealing. It bends very easily and is the most common choice for tying rebar. Since it stays inside the concrete it does not need a coating; however, it rusts on the surface if left in the open.
Galvanized tie wire
Being zinc coated, it resists rust outdoors. It is preferred for exposed ties, scaffolding, fences, gardens and farming. We offer galvanized wire in different diameters by the kg or by the coil.
Which diameter?
- Ø 1.0 – 1.2 mm: Standard rebar tying
- Ø 1.4 – 1.6 mm: Thicker rebar and formwork connections
- Cut lengths: Straightened cut wire saves time in serial tying
Practical tips
- Store the wire away from moisture; do not let water into the coil.
- A tying hook (instead of pliers) speeds up the work considerably.
- Tell us your site requirement by quantity and we will give you a wholesale price.
You can find a diameter table and how many metres 1 kg of wire gives in our galvanized wire gauges guide.
