Galvanized Wire Gauges, Uses and Metre-per-Kg Table
2 min read OSAK

The two most common questions when buying galvanized wire are: “Which diameter should I buy?” and “How many metres are there in 1 kg of wire?” This guide answers both.
Uses by diameter
- Ø 0.5 – 0.8 mm: Floristry, decoration, packaging and light tying.
- Ø 1.0 – 1.2 mm: Rebar tying in construction (tie wire), general workshop jobs.
- Ø 1.5 – 2.0 mm: Greenhouse connections, fixing mesh fences, garden work.
- Ø 2.2 – 3.0 mm: Vineyard (trellis) wires, fence lines, baling.
- Ø 3.5 – 4.0 mm: Tension wires, livestock fences, heavy tying.
- Ø 5 – 6 mm: Post stays and high-tension lines.
How many metres in 1 kg of galvanized wire?
The weight per metre of steel wire is approximately 0.006165 × d² (kg/m, d in mm). The effect of the galvanized coating is small:
| Diameter | kg / metre | metres / kg |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 mm | 0.0062 | ≈ 162 m |
| 1.5 mm | 0.0139 | ≈ 72 m |
| 2.0 mm | 0.0247 | ≈ 41 m |
| 2.5 mm | 0.0385 | ≈ 26 m |
| 3.0 mm | 0.0555 | ≈ 18 m |
| 4.0 mm | 0.0986 | ≈ 10 m |
| 5.0 mm | 0.1541 | ≈ 6.5 m |
Electro or hot-dip?
Electro-galvanizing is a thin, bright coating; it is economical for indoor and short-life jobs. Hot-dip galvanizing lasts for years in open fields thanks to its thicker zinc layer and should be preferred for vineyard, greenhouse and fence lines. Where stainless is required, see our galvanized vs stainless comparison.
We sell galvanized wire by the kg for retail and by the coil for wholesale, and ship it anywhere in Türkiye.
