What Determines Steel Wire Rope Prices?
2 min read OSAK
“Steel wire rope prices” is one of the most searched topics online. However, a single price list is often misleading, because the price of rope varies with steel and zinc prices, the exchange rate and above all the rope’s technical specification. To get the right price, you first need to know what determines it.
8 factors that determine the price
- Diameter: As the rope diameter grows, the amount of steel per metre increases with the square of the diameter; a 12 mm rope weighs about four times as much as a 6 mm rope.
- Construction: Constructions such as 6x7, 6x19 and 6x36, and especially a steel core (IWRC), affect cost. Rotation-resistant ropes are more complex to manufacture and therefore more expensive.
- Coating and material: The general order is lubricated (black) → galvanized → stainless AISI 304 → AISI 316.
- Wire tensile grade: Grades of 1770, 1960 or 2160 N/mm² are priced differently.
- Quantity: There is a unit price difference between buying by the metre and buying a full reel; the unit cost falls with wholesale purchasing.
- Certificate and origin: Test-certified, traceable products are preferred, especially for lifting work.
- Cutting and end work: Cutting to size, taping the ends and accessories bought together affect the total.
- Freight: Coils and small packages go by courier, heavy reels by freight; the shipping method is reflected in the cost.
