Vineyard and Greenhouse Wires: Selection and Installation

Trellis systems in viticulture and support and tension wires in greenhouses are decisive for crop quality and labour efficiency. Choosing the right wire is the easiest way to avoid lines that break and rust mid-season.
Vineyard (trellis) wires
- Carrying (main) line: Usually Ø 2.5–3 mm hot-dip galvanized wire.
- Foliage wires: Ø 2–2.5 mm galvanized wire.
- End posts: Using turnbuckles on end posts together with braces or ground anchors allows tensioning throughout the season.
Greenhouse wires and ropes
- Plant support wires: Galvanized wire and support ropes in the hanging systems of plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers.
- Greenhouse frame and wind bracing: Ø 3–5 mm galvanized steel wire rope offers higher strength than wire.
- Cover tensioning: Lines adjustable with turnbuckles and clips.
Why hot-dip galvanized?
On farmland, wire is in constant contact with rain, fertiliser and spray residues. Hot-dip galvanized wire with its thick zinc layer lasts much longer in these conditions than electro-galvanized wire. For diameter and metre calculations, see the galvanized wire gauges table.
