What Is a Turnbuckle and Where Is It Used?

A turnbuckle — known locally as “liftırga” — is a fitting used to adjust the tension of steel wire rope, wire or chain. The central body has counter-threaded rods at both ends. Turning the body one way draws the two ends together and tensions the rope; turning it the other way slackens it.

Turnbuckle types

  • Hook-eye: The most common type. The hook end allows quick fitting; the eye end connects to a rope eye or shackle.
  • Eye-eye: Closed eyes at both ends; safer for permanent and vibrating applications.
  • Hook-hook: Temporary, quickly installed systems.
  • Jaw ends: For pinned connections and higher loads.

Where is it used?

  • Tensioning wire fences and panel fences
  • Awnings, canopies and shade sails
  • Vineyard and greenhouse wires
  • Stainless cable balustrades and green façade systems
  • Boat rigging and mast stays
  • Suspension systems, lighting and signage connections

Choosing the right turnbuckle

The turnbuckle must match the rope diameter and the working load of the system. AISI 316 stainless is preferred outdoors and in marine environments, galvanized for general use. After tensioning, make sure enough thread remains engaged in the body, and in vibrating environments secure the body with wire or a lock nut.
