Stainless Cable Railing Systems: Material, Diameter and Installation
2 min read OSAK

Stainless cable railings offer both a modern look and a safety solution that does not block the view on balconies, stairs, terraces, bridges and piers. A long-lasting, safe system depends on the right rope, correct tensioning and the right details.
Choosing the rope
- Construction: The 1x19 construction, with the lowest stretch, is preferred; it does not sag over time.
- Material: AISI 304 may be sufficient indoors; AISI 316 is essential outdoors, by the sea and around pools (304 vs 316).
- Diameter: Ø 4–6 mm is generally used in residential applications.
Design details
- Line spacing: The opening between horizontal cables must be determined according to local regulations and project requirements; openings should be kept small for child safety.
- Post spacing: Posts must be close enough that they do not flex when the cables are tensioned; end posts must be strong enough to carry the tensioning force.
- Tensioning: Each line must be adjustable with a turnbuckle or tensioning terminal.
Installation and maintenance
- Have the rope cut to size without the ends fraying.
- Fit the terminals and turnbuckles and tension the lines from bottom to top.
- Check and readjust the tension in the first months.
- By the sea, rinse with fresh water a few times a year; this prevents tea staining (surface browning).
