How to Hang a Punching Bag, Swing or Hammock Safely

Swinging loads such as punching bags, swings and hammocks are stressed far more than static loads. For a safe hanging, every element from the anchor point to the rope must be chosen correctly.

1. A solid anchor point

  • Timber beam: A wood-screw ring eye bolt, in the centre of the beam and deep enough.
  • Concrete ceiling: A metric eye bolt with a suitable heavy-duty anchor.
  • Steel structure: An eye bolt with a nut through a hole, or a beam clamp.

Never hang loads from suspended ceilings, plasterboard or thin profiles.

2. Free rotation with a swivel

Adding a swivel to punching bags and swings prevents the chain or rope from twisting and reduces friction noise.

3. A connection with a locking gate

To keep the gate from opening while swinging, use a screw-lock snap hook or a pinned D shackle.

4. Rope or chain

If steel wire rope is used, the ends must be connected by forming eyes with clips or presses. Choose galvanized outdoors and stainless in humid environments.

Safety tips

  • For swinging loads, take into account dynamic forces several times the product’s weight.
  • The capacity of the whole system is only that of its weakest component.
  • Check the connections monthly; replace them if there is wear, loosening or cracking.
  • For children’s swings, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use certified products.
